Mrs. C Hopson-Above the Storm

I love reading about how the
mother and father eagles take care
of their little family. They build a
huge nest, made up of large branches,
smaller twigs and leaves, and
soft downy feathers from the mother’s
breast. After the eaglets are
hatched, the father eagle goes in
search of food, and eventually he
hunts for toys and returns with a
ball, a shoe, a tin can or something
else he found in someone’s backyard.
These will keep the babies happy
and entertained for awhile. They
are safe and secure in their nest and
everything they need is brought to
them.
But as they begin to mature, life
changes for them. You’ve already
read how their mother strips away
their toys and all of the soft lining of
their home. But she eventually goes further than that.
After she sees that their little talons are getting stronger
and stronger, she takes them to another stage of development.
One day, she begins moving them toward the edge
of their safe nest. This nest is usually eight to twelve feet
across and so the young birds haven’t had to venture this
close to the edge before. She pushes and prods them up
toward the rim of the nest until they are just balancing on
the edge. I’m sure they’re wondering what’s happened to
their loving mother. How could she be so mean? The
Scriptures even mention the female eagle that “stirs up her
nest.” (Deuteronomy 32:11)
