There are two very necessary skills in training up a child for the battle of life: Skill One: Form in them an appetite for the things of God. Skill Two: Train them in self-control. If you can teach your child these two things, they will have success in life. An appetite for God means that they are trained to love that which is true, good, right, just, excellent and of good report [see Philippians 4:8]. They must like the places where God is, where His Word is taught; they must develop an appetite to like His people.
