The prophet would speak to the people, giving them
God’s direction for the nation.
But the generation who was alive under the prophet
Samuel, decided that they wanted to be like other nations
and have a king. They went to Samuel and declared that
they wanted a king, so Samuel went to God on their behalf
and told Him the people’s request.
God’s reply to Samuel was that it wasn’t His will for
them, and to warn them of the hardship their lives would
have to endure under a king. Nevertheless, the people still
wanted a king, so God yielded to their request and gave
them a king.
