Moses was essentially saying, “You are going to have a king,
and when you do, make certain he writes out every word of God’s
law. Have him write it so that it will be branded on his mind and
have a priest confirm that that which he writes is correct.”
Israel’s king needed to memorize God’s Word because his
actions would impact the entire nation. If he did not make
reading God’s Word a priority, he might easily forget it, fall into
pride and come to believe that he knew better than God how to
lead God’s people.
