A remnant of Jews had returned to Jerusalem from
Babylonian captivity. They rebuilt the city and made a covenant
with God to obey His Word in every way, but after two
generations [about one hundred years] they began compromising
many of God’s commands. Society experienced serious problems
including the loss of prosperity. The people began to call out to
the God they had ignored and disobeyed, essentially saying,
“God, what is wrong? We are the sons and daughters of
Abraham! Why are you withholding blessing from us?” God
responded through Malachi, explaining that they had
compromised many things, including tithes.
