Father of the Man Dr. P. L. Colman Author

My own inclination is to conclude that there is an undeniable solidarity, a unanimity among the human specie that remains essentially unchanged, regardless of the superficial ‘ebb and flow’ of diverse cultures and the progressive (or regressive) manipulation of the environment, man’s intellectual prowess and so-called ‘progress’ notwithstanding. But this seems to be entirely too philosophical. One mustn’t lose sight of the real world. After all, “…there is nothing new under the sun.”

A number of significant questions emerge from this brief purview of events in the continuing, unfolding drama of the Colman legacy (if such a term is appropriate). Can it be understood to be entirely coincidental that nearly three hundred years after these early twists, turns and nascent kickings in the womb of one of New England’s founding families, one surviving descendant, one surviving son, should live and play in relative proximity to Hampton? Or more dramatically encore, that generations of the same son’s ancestors (the patriarch Thomas’s progeny) should live in intimate proximity to the once-productive, thriving rural borough of Auburn, where the Colman clan would eventually put down permanent roots, spreading their inauspicious influence for another two hundred years? Coincidence or Providence? Let the reader decide. However history may judge the unpretentious patriarch of the Colman family, it is a matter of record that he and his first wife, Susanna, and their three sons, Benjamin, Joseph and John, left the turbulent confines of Newbury and removed to the farthest northern-most boundaries of the colony. Rumor has it that Thomas was unable, or unwilling, to endure the strictures of Calvinistic teaching and the moral restraints that were freely imposed by the ecclesiastical leadership, and accepted by the general population. Or it could be that the proud patriarch of the clan was simply defiant, refusing to be told how to govern his personal life and affairs.
