Myths About the publishing Industry

When we first speak to an author about publishing, most of them have the same general idea of how the system works. They basically think any book, to be published, must follow these steps:
1) You send in your manuscript to the publisher so they can tell you whether or not they want to publish it.
2) If the publisher “accepts” your book, they then send you a fat advance check and start making your book available to every bookstore in America!
In this scenario, you become rich and famous, forced to hide from your stalking admirers.
There used to be some truth to that concept, although very little truth. Today this is just not the way a traditional or royalty publisher does business (and we are taking a big leap by calling any publisher today “ traditional”). When you think of the traditional method of publishing, you think about the publisher taking all the risks, performing all of the marketing, and then sending royalty checks to the author every month. However, in truth, the days of the publishers taking these type of risks on unknown authors are almost non-existent.
The old, traditional publisher, like any good businessman, has found a way to reduce the risk factors by asking the authors to pay for their projects, thus reducing the risk.
Some publishing Myths
Myth # 1: “I will make more money as a royalty author with a big name, traditional publisher.”
TRUTH: The average royalty author will receive less than 5% of net book sale profits (after publisher expenses), while a subsidized author under the CSN Books and Legacy Line publishing “partnership publishing” model can reach into the 80% profit range. CSN Books and Legacy Line publishing have authors who have sold 40,000 books and made five times the money that a royalty author would have made on sales of 300,000 books.
