exerpt from the book Dead Man Alive by Dr. Robert C. Anderson

If you were convinced God had expelled you from His sight, would you still have the courage to pray? What good would it do? Jonah overcame the obstacle and would not give up on prayer. In the confidence of faith, Jonah anticipated seeing the temple at Jerusalem, the appointed place of worship. He would go there to offer thanksgiving. He knew he had sinned but also knew that God would forgive him.Jonah also felt “engulfed.” The waters around him were up to his neck. This shows that his life was being threatened. With the seaweed wrapped around his head, he felt as if he had been dragged through it. Those on the ship all supposed that was the last of Jonah, but God was looking after His wayward prophet, and he prepared a fish to take him aboard at once. The surprised fish dove clear to the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea (14,000 feet deep), causing Jonah’s neck to become wound about by the seaweed and other materials that filled his messy berth, but it accomplished God’s purpose when it brought Jonah to his knees. Ask yourself, “Am I going to wait for God to bring me down to my knees by some great disaster, or am I going to turn to Him now?”
