In the 70s and 80s there was a particular individual on the radio who was one of the most-listened-to Christian talk show hosts in California. He owned hundreds of radio stations. During that time, there was “the Charismatic renewal” when God’s Holy Spirit awoke in the Church, renewing the truth about the importance of the baptism of the Holy Spirit [and speaking in tongues]. This movement shot across all denominational lines. Presbyterians, Lutherans, Catholics, etc. were all coming into this new fullness of the Holy Spirit. However, this man was rabidly against the movement! He would come on the radio Fearing the Lord Involves Respecting God’s Delegated Authority every day and rile against these leaders and against the speaking in tongues [which he maintained was of the devil]. In the 80s he wrote a book called 88 Reasons Why Jesus Christ is Coming in September of 1988. When I first saw that book, I thought, “Oh boy, here it comes. God’s judgment is coming on this guy!” Many people in my church showed me this book and quoted from it, giving “biblical reasons” why the end was going to happen in September, 1988. The book sold thousands of copies. Of course, September of 1988 came and went and Jesus did not come back. This man became totally discredited in most of the Body of Christ.
