A light year is the distance light is able to travel in one year—
almost 6 trillion miles! That translates to six hundred and
seventy million [670,000,000] miles per hour...one hundred
eighty six thousand, two hundred eighty two [186,282] miles per
second!
Allow me to try to put some perspective on that speed:
The circumference of the earth at the equator is twenty
four thousand, nine hundred two [24,902] miles. It takes
light one seventh of a second to travel that distance.
The moon is approximately two hundred thirty thousand
[230,000] miles from earth. A jet traveling from the earth
to the moon at five hundred miles per hour would take
almost 20 days to make the trip...it takes light 1.3 seconds.
