Ezekiel and the Apostle John saw similar visions of God, yet
both struggled to find adequate words to describe Him.
Both men refer to crystal and rainbows. Ezekiel describes
fiery, glowing metal and John uses gem-like references. Jasper
is a clear, emerald green stone and sardius is a stone that
appears to be red in direct light but is orange and brown in
reflective light. Even with all this detail, I am at a complete loss
to imagine the appearance of God.
Ezekiel saw only a glimpse of the Lord and was compelled to
fall on his face...it was all his mind could handle. John had a
similar response when he saw the resurrected Christ [Revelation
1:17]. I believe people fall on their faces before God because no
other response is possible! He is more splendid than any human
can comprehend. Even today falling prostrate is a typical
response among those who experience the powerful presence of
God.
