The sun is ninety three million [93,000,000] miles from
earth. A jet flying five hundred miles per hour would take
twenty-one years to go the distance...it takes light only
eight minutes!
Proxima Centauri, the star nearest the earth, is 4.3 light
years away. For you to see that starlight on earth it has
to travel 670,000,000 miles per hour for more than 4 years.
A jet flying at 500 miles per hour would take fifty-one
trillion [51,000,000,000,000] hours to make the same trip
[5,771,535.7 years]!
You and I cannot imagine that amount of time...and this is
merely the nearest star! Most stars in our solar system are
between one hundred and one thousand light years from earth;
some stars in our galaxy are 4,000 light years away. The light
you see from those stars tonight began traveling at about the
time Moses crossed the Red Sea.
It takes light ten billion years to travel from one end of the
universe to the other, yet God created it all in seven days...and it
is only as wide as His hand! I cannot help but wonder what other
marvelous things might be out there that God created in eternity
past.
