CHAPTER THREE
Fear That Produces An
Appreciation of God
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by
the breath of His mouth all their host. He gathers the
waters of the sea together as a heap; He lays up the deeps
in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; Let all the
inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.
[Psalm 33:6-8]
What image comes to your mind when you think of God? I do
not mean Jesus. It is relatively easy to imagine our Savior in
human form...teaching the multitudes, reclining at the Passover
table or expiring on the cross. It is quite different to picture the
glorious, majestic, Almighty God...In fact I personally do not
think it is possible. If you try, two things are certain to happen:
you will have a greater appreciation of God and your fear of Him
will increase.
Consider for a moment the God who created molten lava and
the delicate tissue of your eardrum...towering sequoias and the
tiny pollen-collecting hairs on a honeybee. Fixing your mind on
creation inspires awe for the Creator, but try conjuring up His
image and you will always come up short.
