NANA’S STORY
Jack and Elliot loved the new set of army men I bought
for them. Each time they visit, I like to have a new surprise
toy that they haven’t seen before and this time it was
an army camp, equipped with helicopters, tanks, men, and
lots of other things they loved. The problem was that I
only purchased one set and both boys wanted to play with
it all the time. Who would get the helicopter and who could
have the tank, and for how long? Oh my, it was new and
exciting to them and therefore it was not only a cause for
joy, but also for sibling rivalry. Well, this Nana learned
her lesson and the next time they visited, I had two sets of
army men awaiting them. I could hardly wait to see their
eyes when they saw that they could each have a set all the
time. But something had happened! It wasn’t that much
fun to play with them now that they each had one, and
they had moved on to other things so the army camp wasn’t
that popular anymore. I realize that this is fairly normal
for kids: they absolutely have to have something one
time, and then when they get it and play with it a little bit,
it gets old and loses its attraction.
