My heart was shaken by the near tragedy and by
Lucy’s look of disbelief. All I could do was to rush to her,
pick her up, and hold her tight. I took her to the chair and
began to sing to her and rock her in my arms. You see,
there was no way I could explain to a ten-month-old why I
had to react the way I did. She was too young and her
understanding was too limited. All I could do was to
remind her of my love and hold her until she remembered
and rested in my arms. Gradually, Lucy relaxed, her tears
ceased and she was once again my trusting little grandchild.
