Allow me to try to put some perspective on that speed:
The circumference of the earth at the equator is twenty
four thousand, nine hundred two [24,902] miles. It takes
light one seventh of a second to travel that distance.
The moon is approximately two hundred thirty thousand
[230,000] miles from earth. A jet traveling from the earth
to the moon at five hundred miles per hour would take
almost 20 days to make the trip...it takes light 1.3 seconds.
The sun is ninety three million [93,000,000] miles from
earth. A jet flying five hundred miles per hour would take
twenty-one years to go the distance...it takes light only
eight minutes!
Proxima Centauri, the star nearest the earth, is 4.3 light
years away. For you to see that starlight on earth it has
to travel 670,000,000 miles per hour for more than 4 years.
A jet flying at 500 miles per hour would take fifty-one
trillion [51,000,000,000,000] hours to make the same trip
[5,771,535.7 years]!
