CHAPTER ONE
The Origin of Tooth Decay
If you ask most elementary school kids, “What causes
tooth decay?” they will tell you that “Eating lots of candy
causes tooth decay.” If children have looked at any of the
posters in their dentist’s office, they might even say that
“Bacteria found in plaque, and not brushing your teeth
regularly, will both cause tooth decay.”
Plaque is a combination of food and bacteria that is
sticky; it builds up quickly when you do not brush and floss
regularly. If children know about the destructive potential
of bacteria at an early age, then their ability to prevent
tooth decay is way ahead of most of the population.
