If I would have tried to pick those bugs out of the water myself,
they would have fallen to pieces in the water and I would have made
a bigger mess. Likewise, if you try to “out-think” or handle wrong
thoughts mentally, struggling to get rid of them, trying to pick them
out of your mind, you’ll end up with a bigger mess. The more you
handle them mentally, turning them over and over in your mind trying
to “out-think” them or get rid of them, the more mindful you
become of them and the more they seem to multiply.
It is not in trying to get rid of wrong and troubling thoughts, but
rather in turning the mind to higher thoughts – God’s thoughts – the
thoughts of the Word. Taking God’s thoughts will cause all lesser ones
to lose sway, washing them from any place of influence. When these
higher thoughts, the thoughts of the Word, are given their rightful
place in our hearts, mouths and thought life, they will bring about
transformation. All lesser thoughts will be dismissed, and the fruit of
God’s thoughts will be great peace.
