“I’m exploring and expanding upon our family history as a colorful backdrop to the story. Our New England roots go very deep. My Mom and Dad, though long-since divorced, still live in Manchester; most of our other surviving relations still live in the Manchester area, some in Goffstown, some in Weare…you know, the same old town from which Supreme Court Judge Souter hails, and which has recently become the focus of the ‘eminent domain dispute.’ There are even remnants of the Colman clan in remote parts of Maine and eastern New York State. I even have a great-Aunt, Flora, who lives in Florida – maybe that’s why they call it Florida”
This guy’s humor is incurably lame, I thought to myself. Enough already.
“She’s a hundred and four, the sole surviving matriarch of the long, legendary Colman lineage.”
You’ve got to be kidding! Wow…this guy’s a stitch, I thought; he thinks he’s a real comedian…another one of those old-timers who makes a career out of lame humor and limp wit. And an English teacher to boot! With probable emphasis upon the ‘boot’.
“You’re kidding!” Then, without thinking, I asked: “Whatever compelled you to undertake (perhaps ‘undertake’ was an unfortunate choice of words), such an arduous and fastidious task?”
I found myself becoming very intentional about my word choices; diction, I believe, is the proper term; after all, the guy actually made a career of telling people how to write and speak. This should be good. In my experience, English teachers are a curious, eccentric breed, always correcting someone else’s grammar, or quoting some drug-induced loser from the dusty past, or throwing out worn-out clichés. Real nut-cases. These people live in the wrong century and love to revel in a conspicuous stream of words, which the rest of the population is content to live without. I, of course, am free of any kind of bias. If a person chooses to commit to a low-paying, high-maintenance, stress-filled occupation, that’s his business.
