“Absolutely!” I responded without thinking. What did I just do? His friendliness and sincerity had caught me off guard. But for some reason, I felt no regret. No resentment. Maybe this little experiment in collegiality-at-a-distance would be invigorating. Perhaps even enjoyable.
“I’d be honored to read your chapters…I lied, only if you’ll promise to send me a signed copy of your book when we’ve…that is, when you’re finished writing.” I almost felt a twinge of guilt that I had actually suggested to this total stranger that his story could actually interest me, or that I would take the time to read it. How many times had I given and received business cards, or exchanged addresses and phone numbers, never bothering to call anyone? Who really cares about what someone else thinks or does? The world is moving too quickly; time is precious. My own life and schedule demands are enough as it is…
We both sat quietly in our seats, looking straight ahead. He seemed to be peacefully but strangely distracted.
“Sorry to hear about your Dad,” I said.
“I’m sorry, what was that you said?” he asked.
“Your father. I’m sorry about your father. I hope he improves. I’m sure your visit will cheer him up.”
