All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; Unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.
(Ecclesiastes 1:7)
All species bear their own offspring, but the spoken word bears its own mother.
(Bambara proverb)
On a recent trip to Chicago’s Field Museum, I was treated to a close inspection of the priceless artifacts taken from the tomb of the renowned Egyptian boy-pharaoh, Tutankhamen. I was even more delighted, after an elementary but meticulous review of the hieroglyphs of the famous king’s cartouche and name, to be able to finally read the characters. I had met an Egyptologist a few years ago working in the ancient history section of a Borders bookstore who had given me a signed copy of a small handbook he had written and published on hieroglyphs (with basic instructions in reading the Egyptian alphabet). “A little learning is a dangerous thing.”
