Dr. Peter Colman author of "Father of the Man"

“Hello, I’m Peter…Peter Colman.”

I nodded, but thought guardedly to myself: Is he going to adhere to polite protocol and desist from violating the invisible private barrier that divides his ‘zone’ from mine?

“Oh, excuse me,” I offered involuntarily, “I’m Steve…Steve Bachelor. Nice to meet you, Mr. Colman.” Nothing could have been further from the truth! After an already long trip, I was not terribly anxious to indulge him by pretending to be friendly. It was too late.

“Bachelor? Now that’s fascinating. Are you married? Sorry. Just kidding.”

Now I was sure we never should have started this conversation. So much for practiced restraint. ‘The best laid schemes…’ are sure to go up in smoke, I thought. He’ll probably never shut up. Whatever happened to professional courtesy?

Fortunately, this kindly gentleman seemed content to respect my space; he never spoke again until we were well into the short flight. I couldn’t help but notice the enticing diversity of reading materials emerging from his ‘crocodile’ attaché. Probably one of those ‘wannabe’ small-college professors, I mused, bent on imposing his idiosyncratic ideals on the closest victim. As I pretended to relax in a practiced state of disguised diffidence, something attracted me to this figure. Perhaps it was the confidence, the sense of well-being that seemed to envelop his happy countenance. This is preposterous, I thought. What possible benefit could accrue from an unsolicited conversation with a total stranger?
