Author of Father of the Man Dr. Peter Colman

What grabbed my attention during those first critical moments after takeoff was the curious array of books and articles that delightfully distracted him. I managed to get a fleeting glimpse of a couple of unorthodox titles: “Thoughts of Hampton From Days Gone By” A Poem…” William and Eunice ‘Goody’ Cole of Hampton”…And one that really sparked my curiosity, “The Annals of Witchcraft in New England.” After carefully adjusting the light away from me, he discretely unearthed a long, yellow legal pad filled with notes, corrections and marginal references (like a well-used road map), and began to write.

Why should I be interested in some stranger’s nostalgic meanderings?

He was silent; I was the one talking to myself. Curious.

Ironically, seconds later, almost without thinking, it was I who found myself poised to break the silence. It was like passing one’s favorite ice cream shop, or bookstore, or perhaps (for the eccentric minority), even an antique shop, or (God forbid) a flea market, in hopes of finding that elusive ‘sleeper’ that you just must possess, but really can’t afford to buy.

I could resist the innocent temptation no longer.

“Excuse me; are you a resident of Hampton?”

“Oh, no problem. From Hampton? No. I’m a native of Manchester.”

“If you don’t mind the intrusion, do you live in Manchester?”
