A priest named Johann Tetzel, with the blessing of the
Catholic Church, was selling “indulgences” which were valid for
certain periods of time: forty days, eighty days or one year. The
funds collected were used to build Saint Peter’s Cathedral in
Rome. Luther was appalled! His objection to cheap grace and
commitment to forgiveness through repentance was heresy to
the Catholic Church and resulted in his excommunication.
