Today’s economy is income-based. People primarily support
themselves by earning an income, which is used to purchase
provisions, so modern “first fruits” are typically ten percent of a
family’s income.
The first tithe mentioned in the Bible occurred before God
issued the command to tithe. A band of five kings raided the
cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and took many captives including
Lot, the nephew of Abram [later renamed Abraham by God].
Abram, who feared and served God, led a successful rescue effort
to free Lot. He defeated the five kings and collected a great deal
of wealth as plunder. Upon Abram’s return to Salem he was
greeted by the city’s king—Melchizedek [a priest of God]. Abram
offered Melchizedek one tenth of his gains, paying the first
known tithe in human history.
