Joshua already knew his first assignment. Moses himself had said in the hearing of all the people:
Go now and take the promised land for the Lord your God will dispossess these nations before you, and will certainly give it to you, and Joshua is the one who will cross the Jordan ahead of you. (Deuteronomy 31:3)
But which way should they go? How should they wage war? The Canaanites, who lived in the land, were among the most skilled and fearsome of all peoples in warfare.  Joshua looked across the Jordan River Valley; less than ten miles away was the great walled city of Jericho rising up out of the valley like an insurmountable obstacle. Its massive double walls were said to be unconquerable.
Even if you could scale or breach the outer wall, you would be trapped between it and the second wall. For centuries it had been a locked door to anyone wanting to invade Canaan from the east. But it was not the war and battles that most worried Joshua...a
greater concern occupied his mind. He was no longer the young man, merely forty days out of slavery to Egypt, who had gone in to scout the land nearly forty years earlier. Then
it had seemed so easy to go in and be in a new nation in a new land.
He had been so naive.  His life as a slave had not prepared him for the difficulties and pitfalls of the birth of a society. He had been blinded to it all by his enthusiasm and zeal. However, forty years of assisting Moses in leading this people in their desert wanderings had given him a taste of the impossible task that awaited him.

 Thanks,
Mike
