In essence, faith could be defined as the fruit of a relationship with the Holy Spirit resulting in revelation to trust Him. The word hearing implies that there must be an exchange of communication between at least two people in a relationship. One person has to be speaking for another person to be listening to that which is being spoken. In this passage, the person hearing comes as result of the word being communication from God. Faith is a result of a specific word of revelation that comes to a person, or a group of people, regarding a circumstance or topic as a direct result of being in relationship with Him.
Notice that faith is not a blind leap into the unknown. “…Faith is the assurance (the confirmation, the title deed) of the things (we) hope for, being the proof of things (we) do not see and the conviction of their reality (faith perceiving as real fact what is not revealed to the senses).”11 Our assurance comes from trusting God’s specific Word to us regarding our own particular set of circumstances from the reality of the spiritual realm. It is the proof of the things that we cannot see in the natural realm, the confirmation of the things that we had only hoped God would do for us previously.

Faith is the result of a "specific word" that magnifies the Word of God. If, in the midst of a crisis, you hear God say, "Trust in Me, I will get you through it," then that is a specific Word to be followed.
