Copyright..What to do?

There are many ways to copyright your book and for most authors the poor man copyright meets the need of the average author publishing a book. The poor man version involves mailing a copy of your manuscript to yourself registered mail and not opening it; what this does is time date the manuscript and that’s all a copyright really does. In fact just having it on your computer is a form of copyright for it to time dates your manuscript.
Registering your book with the Library of Congress (LOC) is another and formal way to copyright your book. You just go on line, they will ask you to fill out a form called a short form TX, send in about $40 and two copies of the book. This process can take as long as a year for you to get certified.
The only difference between the LOC copyright and the poor man version is that with the LOC version you can sue for damages, of course you would have to prove it and pay the legal fees.
So in short, the poor man copy right works just fine and will allow you to make someone stop using your material with out your permission.

Cover Design Set Up Guidelines


1. Color mode: CMYK (not RGB)

2. Resolution: all elements to be no less than 300dpi (at 100%) as well as raster effects within a program should be set to 300dpi

3. Bleeds: bleeds (edge of page overlap of color or element) .125" (1/8")

4. Programs: CSN accepts the following program files: Adobe Photoshop (include layered file of any artwork); Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, QuarkExpress

5. Fonts: as a professional courtesy, please include screen and printer fonts for any unique fonts used; this is important for any edits to be made and maintain usage of your chosen font

6. On back panel, allow at least 1.75" (1 3/4") for barcode and CSN logo placement

7. Overall margins; text should not come closer than .375" (3/8") to any edge

8. Spine: allow a little "air" between spine title/author name and fold line; leave around 1.25" on lower edge of spine for CSN logo

9. printer files: CSN prepares an eps file with all fonts outlined and with crop marks and fold marks (for spine) for the printer

1. First rule of thumb for a book signing party is to treat it as if you were getting married.

2. Pick a place to have the party that will hold the appropriate number of guest. Usually the church or someone with a nice, big, home can donate this.

3. Pick a date that will give you plenty of time to properly pre-pare.

4. Pick out formal invitations that are classy. The more they are customized towards your book, the better.

5. INVITE EVERYONE AND ANYONE!!! It is important to send the invitations to everybody you have an address for (all family members), I recommend that you gain access to the church directory of any church you have ever belonged to or have had speaking relations with. You need to invite as much press as possible, that means TV, Radio and Newspapers, this may get you some exposure. Make sure you invite the Pastor of every church in and near your city, this often leads to speaking engagements and more book sales.

6. The invitation MUST contain an order form for those who will be unable to make it but would like to buy copies of the book. Hint: Give discounts for multiple orders both in the invitation and at the party.

7. Make this a formal occasion, the nice thing is all you need to do is serve snack food and provide beverages. This is an upscale social function so you need to buy the nice looking paper plates and cups.

8. The second rule of thumb, which is as important as the first is that, “the amount of books an author sells is typically equal to the amount of invitations sent”.

9. People around you will react to the book as you do, if you act like its no big deal, so will they, but if you create a stir and fervor, the people will follow.
